Carefully pull out one of the needles before knitting the first row.
Cast On Using a Larger Needle
Use a needle that is two or three sizes larger than what you plan to use for the garment
hem or rib. Switch to the correct size needle before you knit the first row.
Cast On loosely Leaving a Space Between Stitches
Cast On loosely leaving a space of 1/8 inch or 1/4 inch between each Cast On stitch.
The distance between stitches should equal the width of one stitch, so the thickness
of the yarn and its gauge will determine how much space to leave.
